WD16-Preface

16th International Workshop on WATER DYNAMICS

Fluids in the Earth -Mysterious but Valuable Things-

Season of WATER DYNAMICS has come. Our team in Tohoku University organize attractive workshop of WATER DYNAMICS every year, mostly in March. March is the final month of fiscal year and school year in Japan, we can summalyze all of academic and research activities within the year. We invite most important researches in the specific fields to Sendai, and we would like to communicate each other and to create future direction for Frontier Earth Science.

We had the Great East Japan Earthquake and severe tsumani disaster in March 11 2011. Tohoku University, the largest university in Tohoku District, was partly damaged by the earthquake; however, we can continue to perform high level scientific research activities as well as previous conditions. In 2019, we establish International Joint Graduate Program of Disaster Prevention and Security in Tohoku University. We have great responsibility as a leading university in Tohoku District and also center of excellence in this academic field. In 2018, the most impressive KANJI (Chinese Character) is “災”, which means disaster and/or something wrong. We had not only Natural disaster such as earthquakes, flood, fire, and landslide but also Anthropogenic disaster in 2018 in Japan, and we hope to be better world in the future.

The Workshop will review the fundamental properties and reactivity of Geofluids, and the workshop involves the role of water and carbon for origin of life in the Earth System. Additionally environmental geology is important field for future Earth and human beings.

After the Fukushima Nuclear Power Disaster, the energy policy of the Japanese government has been drastically changed. The government, industry, and citizens are much more positive to develop stable, safe, locally-distributed, and clean energy resources. Geothermal energy has been focused, and geothermal has been considered as one of the most promising solutions for currently occurring energy-related crisis in Japan. ICDP (International Continental Drilling Program) has great interests in high temperature and deep drilling project, named as JBBP (Japan Beyond Brittle Project).

Workshop in Tohoku University campus is 12th-14th March, 2019, and then we move to Hot Spring Area as workshop excursion.

We are focusing on Geofluids in subduction system, it is key material and phenomena for earthquake and volcanic eruption. Geofluids have many faces, sometimes it is very variable things for Earth Processes and human beings, and sometimes it is a kind of villain for human and society. We would like to understand the true face of Geofluids which have mysterious and variable characteristics.

We have organized International Workshop on WATER DYANMICS since 2004, and it had been financially supported by COE (2004-2008) and Global COE (“Global Education and Research Center for Earth and Planetary Dynamics” 2009-2013) and related program (Takuetsu-Kyoten, 2013-2014FY), and then International Joint Graduate Program in Earth and Environmental Science and Disaster Prevention and Security in Tohoku University.

“Enjoy Science” based on “Friendship Relation”, that is the most important, that is motto of WATER DYNAMICS.
